Trans-Canada Highway reopens following beaver dam flooding

KENORA, ONT. - One lane of the Trans-Canada Highway near the Ontario-Manitoba border reopened Wednesday after it was flooded when a beaver dam collapsed.
The dam became saturated in heavy rain and collapsed, forcing Ontario Provincial Police to close the highway between Clearwater Bay west of Kenora and Falcon Lake in Manitoba.
A truck was damaged in the flooding but no one was reported injured.
The Ministry of Transportation warned motorists to expect traffic lineups for the next few days, until the highway is fully repaired. At one point Wednesday, the highway experienced one-kilometre lineups.
Sgt. Ted Becker of the OPP told CBC.ca that beaver dams often wash out roads in the area, but this is the first time he can remember the Trans-Canada Highway being affected.
The flooding washed out a four-metre segment of the highway and left an 800-metre stretch saturated, unstable and cracking, said Becker.
Police found out about the problem at about 2 a.m. Wednesday.
"There was a transport that was going along and the water pushed him around a bit, but he made it through," said Becker.
